Spotting a Hungry Lamb

The picture above is of a lamb who is showing the classic symptoms of hunger: hunched back, feet close together, and fixed position. This little lamb is one twin born to an older ewe who has only half of a functioning udder. When the twins were first born, they both drank from the same teat. However, as time progressed, one lamb started to outgrow the other and was soon taking most of the milk and leaving very little for its sibling. We had been keeping a close eye on these twins since the same scenario happened last year when she gave birth. As soon as we saw the hunched back and standing position of this lamb, we knew it was time to intervene once again. We started her on replacement milk for lambs and she quickly took to the bottle. It took only a day or two for her to come running when she hears our call, as she knows we have milk waiting for her. She still loves her mom, however, and as soon as her bottle is empty, she takes off back across the pasture to find her mom. Her sibling is thriving as well, as she now has all of mom’s milk to herself.
